How to Win Gracefully
Although no one likes a sore loser, what's truly worse is a winner who can't get over themselves. Be a graceful champion by following these pointers:
- Acknowledge something positive about your opponent: their tenacity, skill, or professionalism. They had similar hopes of winning, and you easily could have been in their losing position. Show some respect by shaking their hand after the competition is over or reaching out in a similar way.
- Thank those who got you where you are: supporters, mentors, trainers, people behind the scenes who helped you shine like a rockstar.
- You might be the best in the world or the next big thing, but let others engage in the hype on your behalf. Gloating is ugly.
- When it comes to celebrating, use good judgment. There are some great songs on this playlist (like "Another One Bites the Dust") but understand that there's a time and place for every song and celebration.
5. "One Moment in Time" by Whitney Houston
Proudly play this 1988 song when you've labored intensively towards one illustrious achievement and you're approaching the pinnacle of success. Breathe deeply, then bask in the glory and enjoy your moment:

I've laid the plans
Now lay the chance
Here in my hands.

7. "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" by McFadden and Whitehead
On the road to sweet success, it's natural to encounter some potholes and barriers. But you're a fighter and you found a way over, around and through any obstacle put in your way. Why? Because that's the kind of winner you are! This encouraging 1979 song will leave you pumped up and headed to the next victory.
8. "We Are the Champions" by Queen
The toughest thing about being a champion is staying on top. This 1977 classic is an anthem to greatness.
If you've paid your dues, learned from your mistakes, and repeatedly coming back fighting your way to victory, then you know that true champions never rest on their laurels. Being the best gains you respect, but you have to keep on earning it.
9. "Winning" by Santana
In this catchy 1976 song, a man describes how he was once down on his luck but he is now winning and doesn't ever plan on losing again. Losing makes victory all the sweeter, don't you think?
10. "I'm Still Standing" by Elton John
You've encountered trouble on your way to triumph, suffered setback, and trudged onward to your goal — battlescarred and bruised but not beaten. Let the world know that winning isn't always easy, but it is worth the struggle!

Chances are, if you're celebrating a major win, you might be feeling like this yourself:

Speak it and it's done
Woke up on the side of the bed like I won
Talk like a winner, my chest to that sun.
14. "We Will Rock You" by Queen
This famous 1977 song has become both a worldwide sports anthem and one of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Times. It's about getting ready to completely dominate one's opponent. In other words, get out the celebration playlist because you're headed for sweet victory.
15. "Life's Been Good" by Joe Walsh
How do you measure success? The guy in this 1978 classic song measures it through a fast-paced material lifestyle:
- a mansion he owns but has never visited
- living in hotels and tearing out the walls
- a Maserati that he's lost the license to for driving too fast and
- partying until 4 a.m.

Now all my dreams are coming true, yeah
I've been waiting for this moment ... .
18. "Hell Yeah" by Montgomery Gentry

19. "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen
Sometimes when you win, you just want to rub your opponent's face in it. This 1980 song is a great way to do it, emphasizing that they're one in a string of opponents who has faced you and lost. Better luck next time, loser!
20. "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred
If winning is sexy, then this describes you! While not exactly a graceful victory song, this 1992 hit is a humorous way to celebrate your achievement. The protagonist in the song "so sexy it hurts." Yep, you know the feeling.
21. "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey

The doubter in the song was a popular high school girl who didn't return his affections. Now that he is an up-and-coming singer, he's rubbing her face in his success. Sounds a bit autobiographical, you think?
25. "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer

Questions & Answers
Question: What song is about how the journey is better than success?
Answer: There is a 2009 song by India Arie called "A Beautiful Day." Here are sample lyrics and the YouTube link:
Life is a journey,
Not a destination,
There are no mistakes,
Just chances we've taken
Lay down your regrets cause all we have is now
Wake up in the morning
And get out of bed
Start making a mental list in my head
Of all of the things that I am grateful for
Early in the morning
It's the dawn of a new day
New hopes new dreams new ways
I open up my eyes and
I open up my mind and
I wonder how life will surprise me today ... .

Question: What is a good song for the road to success?
Answer: I suggest that you take a look at songs that are used for graduations, such as "Life Is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane (1991) or Rascal Flatts (2006). Also review the large number of tunes available on the playlist: "Songs for a Graduation Playlist" http://hub.me/aj9Ov

Wow, Flourish,
I missed this fab list of celebratory music, and you even included Santana. You rock, girl!
I praise God that He healed me of DCIS breast cancer ...that is sure enough something to celebrate, and so I celebrate each day of life I am given.
Bless you

Genna - Thank you for your kind kudos. I enjoy both Queen and Journey, too! They are true classics, timeless treasures. Have a great holiday weekend!

Frank - Those songs are often played as celebratory songs, such as at sporting events. For example "Beat It' to send the other team home: "You better run, you better do what you can / Don't wanna see no blood, don't be a macho man / You wanna be tough, better do what you can ... ." And I'm Still Standing is the ultimate comeback song. Although it's about a love relationship, it's about someone who has been battled and bruised and yet has lived through it. And that's what success is all about. "Don't you know I'm still standing better than I ever did / Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid / I'm still standing after all this time / Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind / I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah ..."

thank you so much for your comments on my blog I love this blog and the list of songs you I made. I love your blogs. They are one of the best blogs I have ever seen. I like the write ups you made on Don't Stop Believin and Another one Bites the dust. The list is just perfect.

Tina Turner (a class act in every sense of the word), Queen; Journey (Don't Stop Believin is favorite); are among my favorites on this terrific list. I always look forward to your music hubs, and this article has to be one of your best. :-)

Linda - So glad you enjoyed this so much. I like the upbeat songs, too! Your idea of a roadtrip playlist is a good one; sometimes on a long drive you need to keep things hopping.

Flourish - This is probably my favorite of all of the lists you have put together thusfar. I'm with Bill--I LOVE Queen (we're the same age), but "Best Day of My Life" always gets my toes tapping and my mood soaring upward when I hear it. Toss in a bit of Journey, the Rocky theme, and Another One Bites the Dust and I'm a happy gal. Thinking I should put all of these on a stick for the next road trip. Thanks for a FUN, FUN, FUN hub.
